Employers must provide it in some locations (e.g., Connecticut and various cities in California, New Jersey, and Oregon). Proposed legislation in a handful of states would follow suit. Find out what laws apply to your location here.

It’s now required in NYC for employers with 5 or more employees. Effective April 1, 2014, such employers must provide up to 40 hours (five days) of paid sick time per calendar year for all employees who work more than 80 hours per calendar year. Employers with fewer than 5 employees must provide unpaid sick time.

Many employers give employees paid leave time — for vacations, illness, or personal reasons. There is a trend toward mandating paid sick leave in some cities and states. For example, Maryland is considering a law that would require employers with more than 9 employees to let workers earn up to 56 hours of paid sick leave per year.
