Final Pay Rule

When an employee is terminated—voluntarily or involuntarily—when do you have to issue the final paycheck? Federal law requires employers to pay all wages due on the termination date by the next regularly scheduled pay date. But California, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, and Nevada require the final paycheck to be issued the same day (with certain exceptions).
